Find out how good you really are by keeping track of your scores and establishing a handicap index. Your index is an average of your most recent best scores and provides a way to see how you compare to your friends, family and competitors.

Handicaps also level the playing field, allowing golfers to give or get strokes in competition versus other handicapped players. No more guessing, as your index number will give you a certain number of handicap strokes per particular course and will be an accurate assessment of your scoring ability.

Establishing a handicap index is a necessity if you're interested in entering competitions and tournaments.

CGC will be your home club of the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA). Signing up is simple -- just come in to the pro shop, bring any scorecards from recent rounds, and fill out the form. We'll send all your information to the SCGA and get you an index number.

All score entry is done electronically, either at the computer located at each course you play or on-line at the SCGA website. Indexes are updated at the beginning of each month and you will receive an email with your new index or you can look it up anytime at www.scga.org.

Lag for Power Chuck Anderson For club control one of the first things a golfer should learn is how to keep the club head lagging behind the hands through impact. Many golfers believe effort is power. Just look at any driving range and see what I mean. No amount of effort can produce more power than a player’s maximum turning speed. We simply can not push anything faster than we can run. The next time you practice keep these key points in mind and increase your lag to improve. Never push when you can pull. Never allow the slightest change in grip pressure. Never move the club from the wrists let the club move the wrist. Never stop the hands let them run out of gas. Club head speed is measured by how fast it goes through impact, not by how fast it passes the hands. Always allow your hands to be transported to the end of the follow through with a lagging club head.
